Hiring Philosophy

We select colleagues with the care that one lends to choosing friends.  While our firm is large, and spans the Southeast, each office works diligently to add lawyers who will improve our capacities to serve our clients and preserve the working atmospheres and relationships in our offices.  Consequently, our hiring standards are, thus, rigorous.  We seek lawyers who have demonstrated consistent academic excellence, have involved themselves in the community of their school or beyond, and who are eager to apply their intellects and energies to the ever-changing challenges that our clients present.  Certainly, an outstanding law school record is indicative of these qualities; however, other professional postings, personal references and life experiences are weighed.

Most of our new associates come to us from law schools or judicial clerkships. However, we entertain lateral candidates in all of our offices who come to us from many different disciplines within the profession. We have always rejected the notion that there is one kind of "Smith Moore Leatherwood lawyer," in favor of the notion that who we are changes every day — as it must.  We seek to constantly reinvent ourselves with new talent and new ideas, with an abiding sense of where we have come from that we trust will guide where we go.

Smith Moore Leatherwood values a diverse workforce and seeks applications from all qualified applicants.  We adhere to a policy that prohibits discriminatory practices based on sex, race, disabled or veteran status, or any other personal characteristic protected by federal, state or local law, regulation or ordinance.
