Lori Spencer is a member of the firm's health care practice group in Atlanta.
Ms. Spencer is the former General Counsel for Emory Healthcare, Inc., the health care system at Emory University in Atlanta, and Associate General Counsel for the University. In these roles she provided general legal representation of the health care system in all areas affecting operations including: governance and accountability; tax matters; liability, risk management and insurance; government relations; institutional advancement; and federal and state regulatory compliance.
Ms. Spencer also provided representation in health law including: fraud and abuse, anti-trust, managed care, medical staff matters, medical device safety, food and drug law, human investigations, third-party reimbursement, residency training matters, medical genetics, and bioethics. She has a practice focus on medical research matters, including research agreements and research compliance.
At Emory, Ms. Spencer played a lead role in establishing Emory Healthcare's Office of Compliance Programs and had administrative responsibility for the Office during its inaugural years. Ms. Spencer also managed all professional liability litigation and directed the Office of Risk and Insurance services, which included an offshore captive insurance organization.
Immediately before joining the firm, Ms. Spencer maintained a private practice at a national law firm based in Atlanta, where she focused exclusively on representing health care providers, academic medical centers and non-profit organizations.
